Climbing Kilimanjaro: The Route to use

Generally speaking the route we prefer is called the Machame route. It is regarded as the most challenging of the routes on Mt Kilimanjaro, but we believe ultimately the most satisfying. We circle the summit massif on days 3 ,4 and 5 and ascend to the summit from Barafu Hut. This means seeing the mountain from all different angles and the days circling the base do not involve any real gain in altitude which is good for acclimatisation. After summitting we descend from Barafu Hut down the Mweka route to the gate and back to Moshi.

Day 1 – Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3000m), 4 hours through forest
Day 2 – Machame to Shira Plateau (3850m’), 5 hours through forest and open heath
Day 3 – Shira Plateau to Barranco Hut (3950m), 6 hours on open heath and over two valleys
Day 4 – Barranco Hut to Karanga Valley (3930m), 3 hours on open heath and rock across one valley
Day 5 – Karanga Valley to Barafu Hut (4600m), 3 hours ascent on open ground
Day 6 – Barafu Hut to Summit (5895m) and down to Millennium Camp (3300m), 6-8 hours to crater rim at night, 45 minutes from rim to Uhuru Peak, 3 or 4 hours back to Barafu Hut, 1-2 hours down to Millennium Camp
Day 7 – Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate (1500m) and Moshi. 3 to 4 hours in forest.

We do not allow any trip to be less than seven days to the summit for reasons of safety trekking kilimanjaro summit view on mount kilimanjaro, climbing kilimanjaro.

Essential Tips on How to Buy Wood Playsets

Posted in Climbing

0

Wood playsets are becoming very popular these days. When summer starts, the best possible way through which children can enjoy is by playing outdoor games. Kids love to hangout at parks as they are able to play games like slides, swings, etc. However, rather than driving to a park or a playground, it can be a very good idea to install a wood playset in your backyard. The best thing about installing it at the backyard of the house is that children can play whenever they are at home. Are you thinking of buying a playset? Here are some tips that can help you considerably:

1. Wood playsets are of various types and their costs vary depending upon the size as well as the games that can be played on them. Hence, you should be clear about how much you will be able to spend. This will help in choosing the right playset within your budget.

2. You should also know what type of wood you are looking for your wood playset. Soft wood will not be long-lasting compared to hardwood. The type of the wood you choose will also influence the cost of the playset. The cost of the hardwood playset is higher than softwood. You should not compromise on the quality while buying; hence spending a few hundred dollars will keep you away from buying a new one in the near future.

3. Measurement of the area where you are going to keep the playset is one of the most important things that you need to consider while buying wood playsets. If you are planning to keep the playset at the backyard, make sure the area is completely safe from low hanging branches, driveways, patios, etc to ensure the safety of your children. Keeping this in mind, you can measure the area needed for the playset.

4. Visit a few websites and checkout various kinds of accessories that come with wood playsets. The usual ones are slides and swings; however, modern playsets offer a variety of accessories like rock climbing walls, crossbeams, multiple climbing towers, sandboxes, etc. The more accessories you desire, the more size it will take, so make sure you decide on the best one that has all the accessories you are looking which can fit easily wherever you want to place it.

5. Buying online will help you in checking all kinds of wood playsets without going through the hassles of visiting different shops that sell playsets in person. You can go through various websites and compare the features and cost and then come to a constructive decision.

6. Before installation, you should get all questions related to wood playsets answered. When you receive the wood playset, make sure that it is constructed sturdily. You should also double check if the safety features are properly installed or not. If the size of the playset allows you or someone else to try it then do it in order to confirm that it does not break easily when your child plays on it.

Love to be outdoors, but feeling trapped by the rain? Don’t fret: there are a plethora of activities one can do in spite of the wet weather. Read on for a few ideas.

Foosball

Also known as table soccer or table football, foosball offers great fun for 2 to 4 players. Passing the mini-ball around makes for great time to catch up with friends and family.

If more than 4 people want to play, create a championship Tournament Planningwith players competing against each other one-on-one. Winning players are paired off until only two remain for the final foosball championship face-off.

Rainy Day Walks or Hikes

Rain transforms the world outside, so rainy day walks or hikes are an experience to be savored. Take the stance of many devoted runners, who are fond of saying that there is no bad running weather, only poorly prepared runners. Get yourself a waterproof outfit and venture out. Let wet-weather birdcalls enchant you, and allow fresh, clean smells to energize you. If a trail has a thick canopy of trees overhead, the rain sometimes seems like a mist. Once you return home, take a warm shower and savor a bowl of thick stew.

Travel Somewhere New

What is your ultimate travel dream? Blustery, dreary days are perfect for learning more about your dream spot via book, video, or Internet. Check out your local library’s travel resources, which may include informational DVDs and audio books. Every country in the world has a website. Dream of Dubai? Visit their official tourist page. Craving Costa Rican beaches? Take a mini-visit on the World Wide Web.

Slacklining

Slacklining is a balance sport that is gaining popularity in the United States. This variation on tightrope walking can be done indoors or outside. As its name implies, the major difference between slacklining and tightrope walking is that in slacklining, the rope is not tight.

To slackline, attach a nylon rope between two sturdy points. The height of the rope is your preference; it can be inches or a couple of feet off the ground. The line may also be adjusted to be more or less taught.

Typically, the nylon rope is anchored between two trees outside. However, people who practice this sport indoors often anchor their rope to columns in a room instead.

Indoor Rock Climbing

Climbing indoor rock walls is a safe way to practice an extreme sport. Not only are there physical benefits to rock climbing, but also emotional ones, as participants often feel a rush of accomplishment and confidence when they finish climbs. Rock climbing also benefits a climber’s brain, as they have to figure out what move to make next, and how to maintain their grip as they ascend.

Most rock climbing gyms offer climbing routes for all levels of climbers. The great thing about this sport is that anyone can try it, regardless of her or his upper body strength. As you practice climbing, you will tone your entire upper body without the monotony of lifting weights.

As you can see, with a little thought and imagination, there are plenty of rainy day activities for outdoor enthusiasts. If all else fails, spend gray days planning your next big outdoor adventure. You’ll appreciate your extra preparation once the weather clears and you’re out on the trail again.

Outdoor Mobility Scooters: A Brief Overview

Posted in Climbing

0

Mobility scooters are designed to assist those who have difficulty walking with the tasks and opportunities associated with daily living. They can be designed for indoor or outdoor use, with some models being middle of the road and designed to accommodate both indoor and outdoor use. However, there are particular construction and user needs that have to be met in order for a mobility scooter to perform outdoors at optimum levels. A good portion of what is necessary for Mobility Scooters to be more effective and comfortable for the rider outdoors lies within the construction and design of the base unit.
Base units are the bodies of Mobility Scooters and are often referred to as a platform or base plate. Typically, base units consist of a frame constructed of aluminum, steel or composite materials with a composite or fiberglass floor to support the seat, feet, battery and tiller, also known as the steering column. Base units also include the mobility scooter’s drive train. The mobility scooter’s maneuverability and its suitability for indoor or outdoor use in large part depends upon the characteristics of the base unit such as its turning radius, the size of its wheelbase, its ground clearance, and its overall dimensions.

It is important to evaluate the base for safety features, including its overall stability. A scooter should not tip easily during sharp turns or while climbing a curb. Anti-tip wheels should be included as part of the frame to help support and stabilize the scooter. Most rear wheel drive mobility scooters are intended to negotiate more rugged terrain and are usually equipped with rear anti-tips to support the scooter on hills.

The drive train is a critical part of the base unit and provides either front or rear wheel drive for the mobility scooter. Front-wheel drive is usually found on smaller scooters designed primarily to be used indoors or outdoors on flat, paved surfaces. The motor of the front wheel drive scooter is located over the front wheels and drives only those wheels. Because of the motor and wheel configuration, front wheel drive mobility scooters usually do not have chains or belts and are powered by smaller motors. The front wheels pull the weight of the rider and the scooter making them less capable of handling steep inclines, climbing curbs and managing rough terrain.

Rear wheel drive mobility scooters are powered by motors connected to the rear axle, either via a chain, a belt, a transaxle unit, or a combination of these components. Because the mobility scooter is driven by the rear wheels, they push the combined weight of the unit and the rider, rather than pull it like the front wheel drive models. The combined weight of the rider, the motor, and the batteries over the rear wheels, generally create better traction than that is usually provided by front-wheel drive models. The increased traction combined with the more powerful motors used on rear-wheel drive scooters results in better climbing ability. Rear-wheel-drive scooters also have a greater maximum speed, a longer traveling range between battery charges, and a larger rider weight capacity. These mobility scooters have a wider wheel base and a greater overall length, making some models less maneuverable and unsuitable for indoor use.

Tips For Safe Cleaning With A Ladder

Posted in Climbing

Fall and spring are the two seasons closely associated to annual general cleaning and house maintenance. For gutter cleaning or window washing, ladders are the basic tools people reach for to start their cleaning chores. It doesn’t matter if you use wood ladders, giant ladders, fiberglass ladders, or any super ladder out in the market. These ladders’ structure and material may reduce your risk of being unstable and falling but only just. They are indispensable tools, but can cause a lot of trouble if not used properly. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reported over 547,000 cases were admitted in hospitals and medical outposts due to injuries incurred from ladder use. Though mostly fractures, bruises, and minor cuts, some barely escaped with head trauma and concussions. As such, ladder safety is as essential as your trusty ladder is.

To formally start your cleaning sessions and hopefully finish it without going anywhere near the hospital, inspect your ladders. Loose screws, nuts and bolts, hinges, and rungs must be tightened properly to ensure that the ladder will remain stable while being climbed. Even if you have regular ladders, giant ladders, fiberglass ladders, or any super ladder, dirt, mud, and grime can accumulate and settle on its corners and steps. This is especially true if the ladder is not stored properly or kept outdoors. These grime and muck must be wiped off and cleaned. This will reduce your risk of slipping on the steps. Second, for practicality and safety, position ladders on hard, level ground. The thawing of the soil after the winter will leave the ground with much moisture content. This will make your ground soft and muddy. There is a possibility that your ladder may sink in the mud and be shaky. Uneven ground or flooring also make ladders prone to wobbling and instability. In addition, make sure that the locks and braces are fixed and properly engaged. This will keep your ladder from folding under you.

Regular ladders, giant ladders, fiberglass ladders, or any super ladders are not structured to support your entire weight for long periods. They are structured to be climbing tools only, meaning they support your weight for a limited period while you are climbing to a more stable surface like the roof. This means that you should not, under any condition, use ladders as seats. You will stress the steps and may cause the braces to weaken. Climb down if you want to rest and settle on a chair. It is also important to use the proper ladder for specific purposes. Stool ladders and utility ladders are advisable for low heights while extension ladders like giant ladders are preferred for reaching high levels. Fiberglass ladders are also preferred because of their strength. Also, it is essential to move carefully when carrying things while on top of ladders. Unnecessary wobbling and jerky movements can cause the ladder to shake and be unbalanced. Lastly, it is almost common sense to position the ladder close to the surface you want to reach to avoid leaning over. Asking help in climbing and supporting ladders never hurt anyone as long as you make sure that the one supporting you understands these safety concerns. Make your cleaning a breeze with your trusty ladder and safety tips.
