The Top 10 Tips when buying a Garden Office

So you’ve decided to work from home. And you know that a “home office” is never the best solution and that the solution awaits in your garden. All you need to do now is to purchase a proper garden office. Charlie Dalton, the UK’s garden office expert guides you through the decision making process and helps you avoid the pitfalls.

Choose your size wisely. You should only buy your garden office once, so make sure you get the right size: not just for your garden but for your intended purpose. I‘ve spoken to countless garden office users who always bemoan that, with hindsight, their office is just a little too small for their day to day needs. Think about how much desk space, filing space and meeting space will you need? Will you be working alone, with colleagues or will you be expecting other visitors? Once you’ve established these factors you can start to think about the impact your garden space.

Think about how often you’ll use the office. Even if you are planning to use your garden office only occasionally, you’ll still need to ensure that your choice of building is well insulated and secure if you intend to leave any files or IT equipment in it. If you are a regular garden office worker, then make sure your interior environment will match that of your “in house” office. Warm, comfortable and secure should be your top 3 tick points.

Avoid a shed, summerhouse or log “cabin”. Remember that most garden buildings are designed for garden use. Garden being the key word. You need to be concentrating on the word office. sheds and summerhouses are perfect occasional work destinations when the weather is neither too cold nor too hot – so you and your laptop can stroll down the garden and will be fine for around 30-60 days of the year. However, you’ll be uncomfortable and miserable for the other 10 months of the year. Recently, log cabin importers have added “Home Office” onto their suggested uses of these Eastern European sheds. Sure, a log cabin is a little bit tougher than a shed, but we’ve yet to establish how a single skinned building can effectively deter the local villains, cope with the British weather or can prevent the logs opening up to reveal impromptu additional windows and an unwelcome source of ventilation. They’re cheap (and they are certainly not cheerful!) but it will cost you pretty penny to heat/cool and you’ll be lucky to get insurance for it as a “home office”. This is a risky strategy.

Make the right impression. Even if you are not expecting regular visitors, you must ensure that your office inspires you, delights you and entices you every morning. Make sure the garden office that you choose makes you keen to go to work every morning. You should have a spring in your step as you stroll down the garden to work.

Don’t be a Guinea Pig. Avoid choosing a garden office that will be the “first time” for the company. The internet is full of companies who have produced a prototype – photographed to a great extent on a flashy website …and then plan to sell it to you. Garden Office manufacture is specialist sector, and whilst a few fly-by-nights might have some pretty pictures there is little substitute to a history of production and installation. There are only a few reputable garden office manufacturers in the UK who have a proven track record of consistent manufacturing quality. These companies can supply you with a robust, attractive and comfortable office space. Market leaders are Smart Garden Offices, MPB and Henley Offices.

Don’t get caught out by the new planning regulations. It’s a little known fact that the new planning regulations may make your garden office non compliant if you locate it within 2 metres of your boundary. Make sure you select a garden office that is below 2.5m in height if you’re a looking to make the most of your garden space, and want to avoid having to apply for planning permission.

Make the most of the tax breaks. If you plan to run your business from your garden office you can get some excellent tax breaks – but only if you buy wisely. If your garden office c

Window boxes add beauty to your wooden garden sheds and allows you to do what you do best – gardening. You can make your own wooden window boxes or there are also various options available to buy pre-made window boxes online today.

WOODEN GARDEN WINDOW BOXES – If you are going to construct or purchase a wooden window box for your wooden garden sheds I would choose either cedar or redwood for the window box. The reason for this choice is that cedar and redwood both resist rot and decay. Making your own window box is very easy as a window box is nothing more than a 3 sided rectangle. Use galvanized nails or rust resistant screws for these boxes.

WINDOW BOX LINERS – The best thing about using a liner for your wooden window box is that you will be able to remove the liners to work on the plants/flowers or to work on the window box itself. If you plant directly into the box it will make it more difficult. Furthermore, the liner will allow the window box itself to last longer as there will not be direct moisture contact with the wood all of the time. If I were to build my own wooden window boxes I would buy the liner first to make sure I knew the dimensions I needed to use for the window box.

CONSTRUCTING WOODEN WINDOW BOXES – Most people do not think about making the front edge of the window box tip out instead of being straight up on the side. This is accomplished by putting a bevel cut on the bottom and sides of the window box facing the front board. Pre-made window boxes will usually have this design feature already.

DRAINAGE – If you water your plants/flowers directly in the window box you will need to make sure that both the liner and the window box itself drain the water out of the window box. If the liner does not already have drainage plugs or holes then simply drill some holes in the liner. Also drill holes in the bottom of the wooden section of the window box. These holes should be to the front side of the window box so the water draining out of the window box drains out away from the siding on the wooden garden shed. If you allow the water to drain on the siding it will stain and decay the siding over time. When installing the window box make sure it tips down in the front to make sure the water to the drainage holes you have provided in the front of the window box.

VINYL PRE-MADE WINDOW BOXES – If you are not into wooden boxes there are a lot of pre-made vinyl window boxes you can buy online. Additionally, vinyl window boxes come in a variety of color options. If you buy a quality vinyl window box it will last a number of years and will not decay or rot. They do have a tendency to bulge out a little if full but if they have proper brackets to support them then they will do just fine.

Wooden garden sheds are a combo of utility and style. It’s no question why many gardeners still prefer these seemingly old style structures instead of those modern-looking sheds. Wooden sheds blend completely with natural environment simply because they are made from nature’s materials.

there’s no mistaking why wooden sheds have evolved into one of the traditional must haves of any household. Except for the aesthetic beauty they add to the outside of a home, they also serve many purposes. Storage is the most obvious reason why house owners erect garden outhouses. Gardening appliances like spades, rakes, a lawnmower and brushes are just an example of some of the commonest items you could find in a garden hut. Aside from that, the shed can also function as a safekeeping place for furniture, gear and extra materials that cannot be stored in the house.

So, a storage facility is the normal point of a garden shed. However [*COMMA] today folk are finding more ways to make their wooden garden huts helpful apart from being merely a place to keep garden apparatus and domestic mess. These days, garden sheds can come with a wide variety of features like double glazing, shutters and even skylights. Walls are now made from board and batten sidings rather than the flimsier traditional plywood. Sheds are, certainly, getting more an extension of the main house instead of merely an outside storage structure.

With garden outhouses now being built with over just 4 walls and a sloping roof, they are becoming comfortable enough to provide personal space and relaxation to house owners who crave some personal time. Folk who have past-times can exploit this comfy space to enjoy their fave hobby. Artists can use this area to paint, kids can use it as a play area and individuals who work from home can use it as a garden office. It could also be a workspace for oldsters and even kids who are engaged in crafts and other hobbies. Garden sheds are also being used as offices for folks who telecommute.

contrary to what some folks think, garden huts made from wood are not a problem to maintain. As a matter of fact, they are actually awfully hard wearing and demand tiny on-going maintenance ; maybe simply a easy yearly coat of wood preserver would do the trick. Instant wooden garden sheds are available in numerous DIY and gardening supply stores. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Some are built using special timber applied with chemical preservatives to prevent rotting. There are also many stores these days that offer their clients the option of ordering their garden outbuildings online from the comfort of their own houses.

For gardening fanatics, many DIY kits giving a step-by-step guide for constructing garden sheds can be discovered in most good garden centres. 2 critical things to think about are choosing a reasonable, flat location upon which to build your shed and choosing the materials cleverly for the construction. Occasionally, town or state laws will require you to obtain a building permit for the garden outbuilding, so it still is best to talk with the local authorities before trying to put one up. Apart from that, the only requirement to build robust and fashionable garden sheds is some patience and a bit of ingenuity.
