Transition lenses and sunglasses

Transition lenses can change its color according to surrounding light conditions. The company claims that Transition lenses can darken in bright conditions so that they can provide enough UV protection as well as sunglasses do. This advocated feature of Transition lenses actually attracts a large group of customers, because they think that separate sunglasses are needless.

Transition lenses can provide UV 400 protection, which is sufficient in most states of USA. But these lenses can not replace sunglasses in some aspects. For example, Transition lenses do not fight against high energy visible (HEV) light. In the violet band from 380 to 530 nm in the visible spectrum, high energy visible light is high-frequent and commonly referred to as the near UV range. There is a high occurrence of HEV light from pools, sidewalks and sand.

HEV protection from sunglasses is important for ordinary people, especially for younger children because their eye lenses are thought to transmit more HEV light than adults. Without proper protection, HEV light may lead to age-related macular degeneration, which has been proved by quite a few studies. Only special HEV sunglasses can filter out the near UV range. Currently, only polarized sunglasses can offer protection against HEV light.

In addition, Transition lenses will not darken when the wearer is in a vehicle with UV protected windshield. In this case, Transition lenses are too clear to provide continual protection against glare and eyestrain. In this consideration, Transition lenses behind vehicle windshield are even less helpful than regular sunglasses.

Always coupled with small frames that only cover the intermediate eye area and little of the surrounding area, Transition lenses only offer normal eye protection against UV light. Most sunglasses provide a larger coverage that can protect the fragile skin and still block various angles of sunlight. In this way, sunglasses offer extended protection against harmful rays.

In conclusion, Transition lenses are a good choice for people who need to regularly move from indoors to outdoors or vise versa. But for those spending an extended amount of time outdoors, sunglasses are irreplaceable.

Winter Protection Containers

begonias

As autumn night gets colder, the summer exotics will be at risk from frost. So all the containers in which you have been growing begonias, canvas, dahlias, eulogies and bribes will need to be moved to a greenhouse. Of these, the begonias will be most at risk, so act soon as frost is likely to damage it. The first frost may blacken or damage the foliage of dahlias and canvas, but it will rarely damage their tubers and rhizomes, so they can remain outside for a little longer while there is still a chance to enjoy the last flowers.

For outdoor containers brides are a good choice or, if you choose the less hardy Bolivars or the late flowering forms, they may be grown in a conservatory. For an outdoor container try ermine or any of its Bolivars that flower in early to mid autumn before the first frosts. In a container, even this brine will be only borderline hardy and will need the shelter of a greenhouse in winter.

There are many types of eulogies to choose from. The bi-color has green flowers edged with Maroon Bellied Conure or purple and blotches of a similar color in the stem. Elba has greenish white flowers. Formosa exhibits a wider variation in its coloring, it has a purple spotted flower stem but the flowers are pinkish purple and the leaves may be striated with purple, varying in its coloring.

It has a purple spotted flower stem but the flowers are pinkish purple and the leaves may be striated with purple, varying to intense deep purple. It does not have such a distinctive set of bracts at the top of its flower spike.

A Sydney Christmas

In Sydney, Christmas is a summer festival. Hence there is no snow or snowman, and the feast usually does not even include a roast turkey! Unlike other countries in the west, in Australia, Christmas festivities include a lot of summer activities and celebrations.

As it is not a white Christmas, Santa Claus is not envisioned as coming riding with all his gifts on his sleigh. Just as the people, who love being outdoors to enjoy the warm weather, in Sydney, Santa is also seen wearing his designer sunglasses and enjoying the beaches and the harbour. There are pictures of Santa wearing dashing swimming trunks, sporting a hat and relaxing on the beach with a cool drink in his hand! He may relax under a colourful canopy or he may bask in the sunshine! He may, like the people of Sydney, enjoy the sea – windsurfing, waterskiing or riding a speedboat! Of course, it’s left to one’s imagination – Santa could be playing beach volleyball or beach soccer! And even if he were to come on a sleigh, it would be hopped by huge kangaroos (or boomers as Australians call them) across the sky!

In Sydney, people do not spend a lot of time indoors decorating the house and preparing the feast – not when the weather is warm, the beaches inviting and the Sydney Harbour reposing in an inviting languor! In comparison to the west, the holly and the mistletoe are conspicuously missing. Plants native to Sydney, like the Christmas bush and the Christmas bell, are used commonly for decorations.

The Christmas feast also has an Australian flavour and Sydney attitude in that they are mostly enjoyed outdoors. Instead of the turkey, people go for the vast variety of seafood that is available in the fish markets, and they enjoy barbeques (or ‘barbies’ as they are fondly referred to!) and relaxed parties on sprawling lawns. The fish markets of the Blackwattle Bay are thronged by people who come shopping for fish and other seafood. The leading hotels and restaurants organise lunches, dinners and parties that boast of a vast spread of choice seafood.

Sydney Harbour cruises are the best choice for those who would wish to enjoy both – a lovely feast and the great outdoors! Magistic Cruises offer five-star quality food that would include a wide variety of seafood freshly prepared onboard and a lovely cruise around the Sydney Harbour past the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge and many other famous landmarks! Sydney Showboat cruises offer Christmas Party lunch and dinner cruises. Besides the fine dining experience with a great variety of delicious seafood and the exciting experience of a cruise around the Sydney Harbour, there is also live entertainment such as cabaret shows and live jazz bands!

Whether it is celebrated outdoors, on the beaches, around the harbour or on a cruise, Christmas in Sydney is sure to be a feast of fish, fun and frolic!

How to Clean and Maintain Wicker Furniture

| Posted in Outdoors |

0

To preserve cane and wicker furniture and ensure that it lasts for decades it is necessary to follow a few simple care instructions.

  • Avoid placing wicker items under direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time

To clean wicker made from twisted paper or grasses or midly dirty rattan, willow or sea grass:

  • Wipe with a damp cloth
  • Place outdoors to air and dry as moisture can cause mould

To clean wicker that is made from extremely dirty rattan, willow or sea grass:

  • Brush or vacuum off as much surface dirt as possible
  • Turn the item on its side to allow water to run off rather than resting between strands
  • Check that there are no unusual gaps between the strands of wicker as they will dry in this way and make your furniture take on an irregular shape
  • Then wipe with a soft cloth and soapy water. (If possible add one or two teaspoons of ammonia to the water). Do not over saturate the wicker
  • Wipe thoroughly with a clean damp cloth to remove all traces of soap (and ammonia)
  • Pat dry with an absorbent towel to remove all visible drops of water
  • Place outdoors to air and dry as moisture can cause mould

To restore unpainted or natural wicker to its warm glow:

  • Rub with linseed oil
  • Gently wipe off the excess
  • Let it dry for several days before sitting on it

For general maintenance:

  • Apply a light coat of good furniture polish to protect the Cane and Wicker

You can now enjoy your cane and wicker furniture for decades.
